Cocoon, the installation created by the Indian artist Vikas Patil for the second edition of the 8208 Lighting Design Festival promoted by the Volta Foundation and the Municipality of Como, will welcome visitors to the Como Silk Museum in the coming months.
Positioned since last November in the park of the Museum of Villa Bernasconi in Cernobbio, since the early days it has shown great appreciation both by the public of the Festival and by the inhabitants of Cernobbio, leading to the decision of the Municipality of Cernobbio and the organizers of the Festival to prolong their stay even after the end of the 8208 Festival.
“For many months Cocoon has represented an” added value “for Villa Bernasconi and its garden – underlines the mayor of Cernobbio, Matteo Monti -. The lighting of this fascinating work of art in a new context, something that can be interpreted as yet another transformation favored by Coocon, can only make me happy. The wish is that Cocoon can continue to spread those intense feelings that inspired Cernobbio, even in its new location at the Silk Museum, which is so closely connected with our Museum of Villa Bernasconi. The collaboration, which already unites us, thanks to the loans and this passage of witness favored by the Volta Foundation’s 8208 Festival, will continue in the future with the new project “Let’s do the thread” supported by the Cariplo Foundation, which sees us close-knit partners in the qualification of the tourist-cultural proposal of our territory in which we strongly believe.
Cocoon, which depicts a cocoon of 4 meters in height, represents in all its grandeur the Serbian tradition of the territory while offering visitors a meditative experience, which can stand or sit inside enveloped by the colored light fiber woven around to the structure.
After the experience of Villa Bernasconi, which lasted seven months, in order to enhance the use of the work in other contexts and increase the interaction with the partnership network of the cultural subjects active in the area, Cocoon will welcome for the next twelve months visitors to the Museo della Seta di Como, further emphasizing the link between the work and our important production tradition.
Claudia Striato, director of the Volta Foundation, expresses her satisfaction: Cocoon was one of the two works of the second edition of the 8208 Festival that the Foundation decided to purchase – together with Casaluce di Massimo Uberti – to repropose it in local and extra-territorial contexts. In particular, Patil’s work was immediately appreciated by the strong connection with the territory and its important silk tradition, so much so that it was first requested by the Municipality of Cernobbio for the renewed Villa Bernasconi Museum and now by the Silk Museum. which we already collaborate closely on various projects.
The new symbol offered by Cocoon is flying through the Museum’s activities – says Bianca Passera, president of the Silk Museum – which thanks to the precious support of the Cariplo Foundation, re-launches the cultural participation and promotion of local culture factories. The concept of Cocoon is the most suitable icon to represent the initiatives for the enhancement of the textile supply chain and gelsibachicoltura: having the large sculpture on the threshold of the Museum means giving a strong signal of presence and willingness to collaborate with all local authorities, means start a thought where the Museum is in constant dialogue with the City, representing it and telling it in its exhibition rooms in via Castelnuovo.
The inauguration will take place at the Silk Museum on Friday 6 July from 8.00 pm, with a lighting ceremony at dusk.
